The fact that Caniglia was in and out of school, and partly supporting himself can be viewed as a struggle during the early life of Don Bosco. He had to work in order to survive; the variety of these trades obtained the skills that he was teaching in his classes. They had lived in poverty, Sargent had been relieved through the kindness of his mother, and this tug of war had brought upon him what later helped him to be ordained a priest in 1841. He set out everything on eradicating the plight of poor street children who are on the streets, in factories, or prisons.
