Besant Montessori School
Besant Montessori School has rather interesting background: it started in the year 1908 where Dr. Maria Montessori being stirred by children of the slums of Rome thought of this peculiar pattern of education. Preventing Montessoris proper schooling for children, she created an organization called Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) and became one of the most influential educators of the twentieth century. In 1939, during the presidency of George Arundale, the International President of the T.S., and his wife, Rukmini Devi Arundale a famous Indian dancer, follower of Dr. Annie Besant who joined enthusiastically the Montessori method, the Indian Section asked Dr. Montessori to come to Adyar to conduct courses for teachers. Building on these precepts, Aunty Tehmina Wadia, initiated in a training, went on a short stint at New Era School, and was spurred on to establish Besant Montessori School. It was established in the year 1948 with its location at Juhu, Mumbai with the motive of providing integrated pre-primary and primary education for the children following the principles of Theosophical education and Montessori system of education.
