They arrived in Dehra Dun on April 15, 1847; fourteen boys and girls originally camping along the foothills of the Himalayas with great anticipation for the first structures of the school to be built before the onset of the monsoons. The students increased to 195 by 1853 and the school was rewarded with the King’s Colours, which is an honor bestowed to only five other institutions and colleges in the whole British Empire. Of all the schools, the Lawrence School Sanawar has had the right to use the colors for the longest period unbroken thus symbolizing our unswerving aim at excellence. Initially, the financial responsibility of running the school was undertaken by Sir Henry Lawrence but in 1857 having died, the government agreed to take up this responsibility in memory of Sir Henry Lawrence. This was one of the significant turning points in the history of the school as it transferred from the ‘Honourable Board of Directors to the Crown to continue and uphold the reputation for quality education.
