Loyola School

Loyola School owes its origin to the defining spiritual pilgrimage of the revered personage St. Ignatius of Loyola, the Founder of the Society of Jesus. Ignatius was born in a noble family in Northern Spain, specifically in the Basque region in 1491 and during his early life, he was a part of the nobility social class. However, in 1517, he set on a new course wherein he renounced his wealthy lifestyle to join the Spanish king’s army, Ferdinand. At one point in 1521, while defending the fortress of Pamplona, Ignatius received a serious compound fracture of the leg from a fragmentation grenade. This setback led to a period of arduous convalescence, during which Ignatius delved deeply into two influential texts: ‘The Life of Christ’ and the ‘Lives of Saints’ by Giovanni Pietro Bellori. Steeped in these spiritual productions, Ignatius, indeed, had an internal awakening. Moved by the perseverance of the saints in following God’s plan and simplicity in life, Ignatius vowed to sever all ties with his wealth and embark on an austerity-driven search for purpose in life.
